Our services

Ronewa Analytical Laboratory is committed to providing coal testing and analysis of the highest quality to the mining, energy and environmental industries.

RAL team combines cutting-edge innovation with extensive experience to serve all major coal-producing areas. Our skills extend beyond coal analysis, testing and sampling-we also provide petroleum coke analysis and testing, metallurgical coal testing, ultimate and proximate analysis, and float/sink washability study.

Safety, health, environment and quality policy

  • Sampling

Sampling involves taking a portion of material selected to represent a larger body of material.

  • Sample preparation

The procedure followed to select the test portion from the sample (or Subsample) and indicates; In-laboratory processing, Mixing, Reducing, Cooling and Quartering, Riffling, Milling and Grinding.

  • Proximate Analysis

    >> Proximate analysis indicates the percentage by weight of the fixed Carbon, Volatiles, ash, and Moisture Content in Coal.

    >> Fixed Carbon acts as a main heat generator during burning.

    >> High Volatile matter content indicates easy ignition of fuel.

    >> Ash is an impurity that will not burn, the Ash content is important in the design of the furnace grate, combustion volume, pollution control equipment.

  • Ultimate Analysis

Ultimate analysis indicates the various elemental chemical constituents such as Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Sulphur, etc. The Ultimate analysis determines all coal components. This information is required for the calculation of flame temperature and the duct design, etc. The Ultimate Analysis is determined or done in our properly equipped laboratories.

  • Calorific Value

This test will determine the heating value of coal; it varies from coal field to coal field, Calorific value is determined in a bomb calorimeter.

  • Moisture Analysis

Four categories fall within moisture determination in coal analysis.

    1. As received basis (arb): Moisture content determined on the sample as-received at the laboratory.

    2. Air-dried basis (adb): Moisture content determined after the sample is dried in air for a period of a few days to remove any surface moisture.

    3. Dry basis (db): Additional moisture removed by heating in an oven at 104-110°C.

    4. Dry ash free basis (daf): Volatiles matter and fixed carbon are calculated to 100% by removing the ash and moisture contents.

  • Fixed Carbon

Fixed carbon is the solid combustible residue left after the moisture and volatile matter have been driven off by heating in an inert atmosphere. In the proximate analysis, it is calculated by subtracting the sum of moisture, ash and volatile matter from 100%.

  • Volatile matter

Refers to the products, excluding moisture, that are given off in a gaseous or vaporous form when coal is heated to 950°C in an inert atmosphere, according to prescribed methods. Volatile matter is mainly composed of combustible gases.

  • Abrasive Index

  • Free Swelling Index

  • Hardgrove Grindabilty Index

Ronewa analytical laboratory strives for excellence, safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ) are key integral points in the way we operate.
